Enjoy a relaxing getaway vacation in a new, spacious oceanfront cottage on a private island off the coast of Down-East Maine...with amenities to make your stay comfortable. Truly one of the last places to enjoy the natural serenity and harmony of "old Maine". The Boston Globe travel writers call Matinicus Island "rugged, but beautiful, with sweeping ocean views and sandy beaches ... One of the last places in Maine where the old Down-East lifestyle survives in anything like it's pure form ... unspoiled and unpretentious".
This large (1000 sq/ft), two-story cottage sleeps six people and is charmingly furnished. The first floor has a queen bed in one bedroom, and a queen & two twin beds in the other. A full bathroom is accessed from the common hallway and a large deck overlooks the open ocean. The second floor has a large oak dining table (seats 6) and a fully equipped kitchen. An open and spacious living area with easy chair and two couches (one is double fold-out bed) that opens onto a deck overlooking the open-ocean, and nearby islands. Live lobsters are delivered to your door by local lobstermen. Fresh bakery goods are delivered to you by a local baker.
Gaze at lobstermen steaming out to haul and land lobsters from the deck of this beautiful summer cottage overlooking the open ocean and the small lobstering village. A 3-minute walk to the maine wharf and a 5-minute walk to a beautiful, sandy crescent beach. A larger sandy cresent beach is just a 20 minute hike along a dirt road and features sweeping gorgeous views of Criehaven Island which is the setting of acclaimed writer, Elisabeth Ogilvie's "Bennett's Island" book series. Many of these literary works are in the cottage library including the full set of "Tide" and "The Lover's" Trilogies.
Explore the many hiking trails to nearby bird sanctuaries, Hemlock forests, rocky ledge overlook points, and other beautiful swimming beaches ... or take a boat ride to Matinicus Rock Lighthouse to see the Puffin Colonies and the site where famous heroine lightkeeper, Abbie Burgess, once worked and lived.
A nearby gift shop features island crafts and novelties. A local farmer's market has fresh produce and bakery items. Extra provisions (including beer & wine) can be delivered by plane to small landing strip from the mainland grocery store for a small fee.
Transportation to and from the island can be arranged by ferry boats, airplane, and personal boat. Moorings are available and can be reserved ahead. Visiting families often find more opportunities to bond due to Matinicus Island's lack of "distractions" by tourism, allowing for the renewal of close personal relationships. Matinicus is a true remote getaway in every sense of the word ... Maine-ly you can expect lots of peace & quiet!
